Hello and welcome to Skinaite Clinic. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with psoriasis, we know it can be daunting. However, remember that you are not alone—we’re here to support you through every moment of the process.
At Skinaite Clinic, our goal is not only to treat your skin but also to care for your overall well-being. So, let us help you understand psoriasis in simple, clear terms.
What is Psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a long-term skin condition that arises when the immune system becomes overly active, causing skin cells to multiply at an accelerated rate. As a result, red, inflamed patches covered with silvery-white scales form on the skin.
Normally, our skin renews itself every 28 to 30 days. In psoriasis, this renewal happens in just 3 to 7 days—much faster than normal—causing the skin cells to pile up on the surface.
Psoriasis is not contagious. You cannot catch it from someone else, and no one can catch it from you.
Types of Psoriasis We Help You Manage at Skinaite Clinic
There are several types of psoriasis, and they may look and feel different on each person. Here’s a gentle overview:
- Plaque Psoriasis (Most Common)
- Raised red patches with white or silver scales
- Usually appears on elbows, knees, scalp, and back
- Guttate Psoriasis
- Small, drop-shaped spots often triggered by throat infections
- More common in children and young adults
- Inverse Psoriasis
- Smooth, red patches in folds like the armpits, groin, or under breasts
- Sensitive to friction and sweat
- Pustular Psoriasis
- White pustules (blisters with non-infectious pus) surrounded by red skin
- May appear on hands and feet or spread across the body
- Erythrodermic Psoriasis (Severe & Rare)
- Widespread redness, peeling, and burning sensation
- Requires urgent medical attention
- Nail Psoriasis
- Causes pitting, discoloration, or thickening of fingernails and toenails
- Scalp Psoriasis
- Red, scaly patches on the scalp that may itch or flake like dandruf
Each type has its unique features, and we carefully diagnose and tailor your treatment accordingly.
What Causes Psoriasis?
The root cause of psoriasis is an immune system that is overactive, mistakenly attacking healthy skin cells and causing inflammation. While the exact reason is still being studied, we do know some common triggers:
Genetics
If a close family member has psoriasis, your chances increase.
Infections
Especially streptococcal throat infections.
Skin Injuries
Cuts, burns, or even insect bites.
Stress
Can trigger or worsen symptoms.
Weather
Cold and dry weather often makes it worse.
Medications
Certain drugs like lithium, beta-blockers, or anti-malarial tablets.
Lifestyle Factors
Smoking, alcohol, or obesity.
At Skinaite Clinic, we will take time to identify your specific triggers and help you avoid them wherever possible.
What Are the Symptoms of Psoriasis?
Each person may experience psoriasis differently, but here are some common signs:
- Red, inflamed patches of skin
- Thick, silvery-white scales
- Dry skin that may crack and bleed
- Itching, burning, or soreness
- Nail changes – like pits or discoloration
- Joint stiffness or pain (in psoriatic arthritis)
If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, please don’t hesitate to reach out. Early diagnosis can make a big difference.
How Do We Diagnose Psoriasis at Skinaite Clinic?
Diagnosing psoriasis is usually straightforward, and we make sure the process is comfortable and respectful.
- Clinical Examination: Our dermatologist will carefully examine your skin, scalp, and nails.
- Medical History: We’ll ask about your symptoms, family history, lifestyle, and possible triggers.
- Skin Biopsy (if needed): A small sample of skin may be sent to the lab to confirm the diagnosis—this is quick, safe, and done with your comfort in mind.
